Twin Peaks Series 2 Episode 20 – The Path to the Black Lodge

A whole team of guys struggle to carry the pawn and body of Rusty Tomaski (Ted Raimi) away, the police talk to one of Rusty’s band members (Willie Garson), whilst Andy (Harry Goaz) is visibly upset in the background, hearing the story of how they were going to move to LA. “He’s taken another pawn but hasn’t told us his move. Windom Earle is playing off the board.”

Lucy (Kimmy Robertson) asks Andy what he knows about saving the planet, so she’s entered the Miss Twin Peaks pageant too, for the prize money. The next day she’ll decide who will be the father of her child. Andy’s advice on saving the environment: “Styrofoam never dies for as long as you live.”

Jack (Billy Zane) at hotel reception, asking for news on Audrey’s return before he leaves. Ben (Richard Beymer) having a physical from Doc (Warren Frost). Doc advises him to stay away from Eileen (Mary Jo Deschanel) “I can’t, not as long as the lie survives.” “Goodness in you is like a time bomb.” The lie has to be that he’s Donna’s father, what’s the purpose of this storyline? Just to give Donna and Ben something to do in the last few episodes? A friend of Jack’s has been murdered! Anyone we know?

Donna (Lara Flynn Boyle) reads her birth certificate, her father’s name is left blank, but she finds photo albums that heavily feature Ben. Hawk (Michael Horse) is rounding up Donna, Audrey (Sherilyn Fenn), probably Shelley (Madchen Amick) too.

“A brave man is dead, I have to take his place.” Is Jack actually a decent, incredibly wealthy dreamboat? What is this, a Hallmark movie? Is he secretly a relative of Santa? He gives Ben a note to give to Audrey.

Major Briggs (Don S. Davis) talks to Kevin, who is Kevin? He looks like a younger Harry (Michael Ontkean). Windom Earle was one of their best on Project Bluebook, but he became obsessed when they looked from the stars to the woods, became violent and was removed from the project. Video, talking about a place of power that can be utilised, the black lodge. Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) assumed Windom Earle had come for vengeance, for him, engaged them in “Subterfuge and red herring”, maybe all a distraction so he can get to the black lodge. Something to do with the cave painting. Major needs a rest, goes for a walk in the woods to clear his mind whilst Cooper and Harry go through all the paperwork they have. Windom (Kenneth Welsh) listening in, laughing intently. Whilst he’s distracted, Leo (Eric DaRe) secretly pockets what looks like a staple remover.

At the Double-R diner, an old lady’s hand starts shaking as she eats a slice of pie. Scumbag Bobby (Dana Ashbrook) actually is improving Shelley’s speech (removes the phrase “kick butt”, probably wouldn’t go down too well with the old man judging board). Seeing Shelley kissing Gordon in the last episode made him realise how much he loves her. Shelley better win this thing and kick him fully to the curb. Nope, they’re kissing passionately, utter over the top public display of affection, only interrupted by a phone call from Cooper.

Oh, the actual judges alongside the mayor (John Boylan) are now Norma (Peggy Lipton) and Dick Tremayne Designer Menswear (Ian Buchanan), Norma is going to be pro-Shelley, Dick already infatuated with Lana, as of course is the mayor, who advises her to “Wear a dress with a slit all the way up to Seattle.” She insists they can marry only after she’s won the Miss Twin Peaks contest.

Cooper questions Donna, Audrey and Shelley about the letters, have they interacted with strangers, they all have. Shelley recognises the handwriting as belonging to Leo. Instructs them all to be careful, check in regularly with their parents and the police, never be alone. “You’re in danger, we all are.”

Leo sees Shelley’s face on Windom’s playing card display, Windom calls her “a trollop,” asks if Leo would mourn her passing. Oh, Leo didn’t take a staple remover, he took his own shock collar remote, seems surprised when he electrocutes himself when using it. What was his plan? Did he think the shocker worked based on who the remote was pointed at? Silly man.

Audrey returns to the hotel, Ben wants her to win Miss Twin Peaks and be the “Stop Ghostwood” spokesperson. All she’s interested in is the location of Jack, who left just a few minutes ago, heading to Brazil. She chases after him. Ben senses something behind him, what? Bob? Audrey finds Pete (Jack Nance) talking to Josie in a painting above the fireplace, and demands he take her to the airport. Why does Pete think Josie is in a painting? She’s in a drawer knob down the hall.

Wasn’t Hawk meeting with someone Lucy never seen before, who was that? We didn’t see him then. Cooper, Harry and Andy puzzling over the cave drawing, Major Briggs not returned from his woodland walk. Cooper distracted, thinking about Annie Blackburn. His hand starts shaking on the window blind, like the lady eating the pie. What’s going on with the tremor epidemic?

Briggs checking out a tree, touches the mark behind his ear, approached by two people (Windom and Leo?) in a horse costume, black body with white head, draws a gun and shoots him with a dart in the neck, singing “Home on the Range”. Briggs collapses, yep it was Windom and Leo.

Annie (Heather Graham) screws up the Miss Twin Peaks flyer, Cooper suggests she enter, he declines. He admits he’s supposed to be focussing on an important job, cant stop thinking of her, and she’s been seeing his face in eggs all morning. She suggests they go bowling, he suggests dancing, she doesn’t know how, but he’ll teach her. Something causes some plates to smash whilst they kiss.

Audrey and Pete arrive at the airport and block Jack’s plane from taxiing. They hug, kiss on the runway, they declare their love for each other, he and his stubble declare they have to leave but don’t know when they’ll be back. “I’m a virgin, I want you to make love to me.” “Here and now?” “It’s your jet.” “Thank god for that.” Pete, well out of earshot, tears up at the moment, then his hand starts shaking. Hand shakes at intense emotion? Old lady enjoying pie, Cooper thinking about Annie, Pete overcome with sight of love.

Briggs is not dead, Windom strung him up on a big target, questioning him but receiving no useful information, so stabs him with needle of something. Truth serum? Tells Windom he first saw the cave drawing in a dream. He was taken, but he recognised the signs. “If Jupiter and Saturn meet, they will receive you.” Starts spewing gibberish so Windom demands Leo put him to bed.

Catherine (Piper Laurie) shows Andrew (Dan O’Herlihy) the eclipse series from Eckhardt’s box, Andrew suggests beating it with a rolling pin to open up the next layer. Andrew pressing things that absolutely are not buttons, but still managed to decipher a means of entering a date? Then he smashes it open, revealing a smaller metallic cuboid inside.

Annie waiting at the bar for Cooper, invites her to dance. She’s reluctant. “Just think of it as a walking embrace. Just follow me.” “We’ll follow each other.” Mid asking if he’s being too forward, she kisses him and requests more than his kisses. Mayor Milford giving speech on a malfunctioning microphone, classic. Cooper makes Annie feel not afraid, he shouldn’t treat her differently because she’s from a convent. She decides to enter the Miss Twin Peaks contest after all, “See the other side.” When Cooper tells her “You’re the queen” the giant (Carel Struycken) appears on stage and gives a VERY CLEAR “Noooooooo!” motion.

Pete asleep in the car, many hours later, wakes up to Jack’s plane taking off. Audrey, crying a single tear, watching him fly away. “He’ll be back one day, he promised.” “He also promised to take me fishing and he never did.” “Fishing? I have some tackle in the trunk. There are many cures for a broken heart, but nothing quite like a trout’s leap in the moonlight.” Pete can be adorable sometimes.

Leo freaking out, so is Briggs, as Windom sings to them, the cave drawing a clock? I believe Windom’s asylum period was fully justified. He sees a map in the cave drawing, a map to the black lodge. Cackles maniacally.

In the woods, a spotlight, a denim-wearing arm emerges from the darkness, Bob’s back, baby! Red curtains flutter in a puddle’s reflection.

New mysteries:
Who is Jack’s friend that has been murdered in Brazil? – I don’t think the person is relevant, just needed to get him out of the show?
Can Pete see Josie in the painting? – I don’t think so, think he’s just talking to her wherever she may be.
What’s with the hand tremors? – I think it is caused by intense emotion, but beyond that I don’t know. Is this like the Bob thing, where people see him if they’re special or going to die? I hope not, as the only characters we know who’ve suffered so far are Cooper and Pete, and I’m a fan of them both.
Why is the giant against Annie entering Miss Twin Peaks? – He mainly seems to get involved when Bob kills someone, is Annie Bob’s next victim?

Old Mysteries:
Who attacked Jacoby?
Is the Waiter real?
What’s with the magic Tremond kid?
Who was trying to call Harry at the police station?
If the owls are not what they seem, what are they?
Why does Nadine think she’s 18? Why is she super-strong now?
Where did Bob go? Is he an owl now?
Why were Bobby, Leo and Big Ed brought to the Poirot reveal scene?
What happened to Maj. Briggs?
What’s the deal with Andrew being alive?
Did Nicky kill his parents? Is he devilish in some way?
Is Lana actually a witch?
Is Windom’s chess game to punish Cooper for something?
What is Windom up to? – Subterfuge and red herring! Distracting Cooper so he can get to the black lodge?
Is John Justice “Jack” Wheeler too good to be true? – Nope, he’s just that good.
What caused Josie to die? Why did Cooper see Bob and the dancing man afterwards and, most importantly, why is she now haunting a drawer knob? Why did Josie’s body weigh so little?
What are Catherine’s plans for Ghostwood?
Who is the guy reading a book?
Why did Jones try to kill Harry?
Who is going to win Miss Twin Peaks? – Audrey, Shelley, Donna, Annie, Lana, Lucy or Nadine (I doubt it’ll be someone we don’t know). As the giant was quite against her entering, I’m thinking Annie might win, or her presence at the event will cause something else to happen.
What has Windom found in the cave?
What’s the gift from Thomas? – A metal cuboid. That’s probably all it is, right?
Why has Jack got to leave? – Replacing a dead friend in Brazil, as you do.
