My Week in Movies, 2015 Week 49

I’m feeling overwhelmed, run-down, depleted and frantic, so it must mean we’re nearing Christmas. As such I don’t have time for this introductory nonsense this week, plus I haven’t got much to say, so let’s get straight into the movies. Here’s what I watched this week:

Magic Mike XXL (2015)
I can’t say I was overly looking forward to this after the relatively lacklustre reviews I’d seen, and it turns out my expectations were correct. I’ve only seen the first Magic Mike once and haven’t felt the need to retread those steps, and there’s even less chance I’ll go back to this one. It’s exceedingly light on plot. Mike (Channing Tatum) has abandoned his stripping days and set up his own carpentry business, but times are tough and he isn’t leading the life he’d planned. Plus, generic girlfriend from the first one has left him, so Mike hitches up to the old gang’s one last tour, heading out on a road trip to a stripper convention. Along the way they hit a few stumbling blocks, but nothing that isn’t immediately resolved within a scene or two and without much drama, and with plenty of dancing and gyrating. I’m neither a fan of dancing or nudity, so mixing the two together didn’t bode well. As a throwaway piece of fluff there’s some entertainment value here, but for anything else look elsewhere.

We through Gremlins 2 into the podcast discussion mix as well, and I’ll tag that review in with the one above. Enjoyable silliness.
