Opens with train screeching, whispering, hospital machine beeping, super slow spinning zoom out from hole-filled hospital ceiling tiles. Leland (Ray Wise) looks haunted, being read his rights, waives his right to an attorney. Outright admits to killing Jacques for killing Laura (based on the evidence that “he was arrested for it”). Dr. Hayward (Warren Frost) witnessing it all behind Leland. Afterwards, Deputy Andy (Harry Goaz) asks if he can retake the sperm exam he “flunked”, gives Andy a pot to go fill whilst Doc waits in the car. Andy of course bumps into Lucy (Kimmy Robertson), who finds his copy of Flesh World on the way to the restrooms, lol. Post-session, Andy trips and drops the sample pot under the chair, Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) makes him freeze bent over to check out his boot tread. For most people this would be a notably embarrassing day, for Andy it’s just Wednesday. Cut to a waterfall, if I were in Andy’s position that’s all I’d need, no magazine required.

Allegedly travel critic M. T. Wentz will soon be arriving in Twin Peaks, with plans to check out the hotel. Jean (Michael Parks) is waiting for Ben (Richard Beymer) in the study, fire already raging, with a video of Audrey (Sherilyn Fenn) tied up. “I’m just the messenger, they request a large sum of money. I require something else entirely.” Cash to be delivered to Jean by Cooper “the FBI man”.
Norma (Peggy Lipton) has also heard about the imminent M. T. Wentz arrival, and would love a good write-up of the Double R Diner. Hank (Chris Mulkey) heads out to get some flowers, candles and tablecloths, Norma wants to try regional dishes, Hank suggests she phone Big Ed (Everett McGill), get him to recommend the Double-R to any newcomers stopping for fuel.
It takes 15 minutes for last episode’s diary cliffhanger to be brought up! Harold (Lenny von Dohlen) volunteers to read from it, picks a section in which Laura talks about her positive thoughts about Donna (Lara Flynn Boyle) but also her own fears. Suggests giving it to the sheriff, Harold says no, he’s read it “from cover to cover” and there’s no solutions in it. Says Laura gave it to him. This all sounds like utter bollocks and Harold is lying his arse off.
The ransom for Audrey is $125,000 cash, Ben asks Cooper to deliver it, shows him the tape.
Josie (Joan Chen) returns! Arms laden with boxes. Pete (Jack Nance) reveals Catherine died in the fire, but they haven’t found the body, her funeral is soon but they’re not certain what they’ll be burying. Clearly Pete doesn’t understand the Gandalf rule of dead characters.
Jean playing good cop to Emory’s bad cop with Audrey, Emory hit her, Jean says he’ll never do that. Emory keeps babbling about how reasonable people react, so Jean shoots him dead, classic blood from the mouth.
“He never exercises, he never washes his car, and he doesn’t even own a sports coat!” – why Lucy broke up with Andy after a year and a half. Started seeing Dick Tremayne, Designer Menswear, but isn’t seeing him anymore, and she doesn’t know if she wants to get back together with Andy or not.

Norma and Hank have spruced up the Double-R, even painted the bathroom, that’s a heck of a few hours work, well done. They suspect a newcomer (Ritch Brinkley) is M. T. Wentz, up until he only orders a cheeseburger, fries, and a cherry coke. Hank secretly searches the guy, finds out he’s the state prosecutor. Donna tells Maddy (Sheryl Lee) that she’s going to get Laura’s diary from Harold, with or without her.
Josie showing off her new clothes to Harry (Michael Ontkean). He brings up the insurance money plan. She seems aghast, then kisses him and tells him to tear her new expensive clothes.
Judge Sternwood (Royal Dano) arrives in an ominous storm. Harry arrives “You got the look of a man with filly problems, son. If they don’t take the saddle you got two options, I won’t bore you with either one of ’em.”

Dick Tremayne Designer Menswear (Ian Buchanan) shows up with $650, all he can scrape together, to give to Lucy to fix her “little problem”, narrowly avoids using the abortion word. She furiously dismisses him. I’m not saying he’s performing admirably well here, but at least Dick Tremayne Designer Menswear is actively trying to help and isn’t just running for the hills.

Leland before the Judge, assigning bail, the prosecutor is running late so they wait until morning, Leland quite accepting, representing himself. “I’ll speak for us all, we have hard jobs.” Newcomer, Sid (Claire Stansfield), arrives, judge’s very attractive law clerk.
Of course the Tri-county lumber queens semi-final is taking place at Ben’s hotel, he’s the worst, cant help himself. A new guest, Mr. Tojamura (Fumio Yamaguchi) has arrived, travelled from Seattle. The hotel clerk thinks its M. T. Wentz, so sends him to the Double R.

The mystery man following Cooper is Josie’s cousin Jonathan (Mak Takano). Josie is part of a long-con plan, been in Twin Peaks for 6 years, taking the mill down was always the plan. “What about the sheriff?” “He means nothing to me.” Cooper asked Harry to send his best member of the Bookhouse Boys to help with a plan, so Harry comes himself.
Hank attends to someone banging on the window of the Double R, it’s cousin Jonathan waiting inside in darkness, dark suit and sunglasses. Hank utterly fails to land a hit on the guy with fists or a torch, gets roundly laid out on the diner floor. “Next time I take your head off”
