Twin Peaks Season 2 Episode 8 – Drive with a Dead Girl

I feel like this season has really turned a corner now we know definitively that Leland is possessed by Bob, and presumably has been behind everything so far. Let’s go!

“and Piper Lauria as Tojamura and Catherine Martell”

Leland/Bob (Ray Wise) is working on his golf in the lounge when Donna and James (Lara Flynn Boyle & James Marshall) come to bid Maddy farewell, but he allegedly dropped a disappointed Maddy at the train station 20 minutes ago. All these golf balls missed the hole. Sarah (Grace Zabriskie) is still alive and talking to Leland? Odd, she was visibly upset the last time we saw her. “Say hi to your folks for me, Donna.” What about James’ guardians? Has Leland-Bob forgotten about Big Ed and Nadine? Bob (Frank Silva) smiles back at Leland from the mirror, I’m assuming only he sees that. Maddy (Sheryl Lee) is wrapped in plastic in a golf bag, Leland puts her in boot of his car, puts the top down to enjoy the sunshine, and drives off humming to himself. Psychopath.

Ben Horne (Richard Beymer) is in prison, brushing his teeth, Jerry (David Patrick Kelly) arrives and says he looks terrible. I’m shocked they’ve allowed Ben to keep his necktie, feels against protocol for this kind of situation. As Leland been charged with murder, Jerry is unwisely stepping in as Ben’s useless defence attorney “First things first, did you kill her?” Jerry consulting a book on law, unsure of anything, but reminiscing about bunk beds, as kids watching a girl dance with a torch. Ben’s alibi is Catherine, as yet whereabouts unknown to him, but I’m thinking her disguise may be revealed soon.

Lucy (Kimmy Robertson) returns with her sister Gwen, it’s Kathleen Wilhoite from Road House and E.R.! She has a baby, and is very well cast as Lucy’s sister because she can unashamedly have the following interaction with Hawk (Michael Horse): “You must be that native person I’ve heard so much about. God you must hate all us white people after all we’ve done to you.” “Some of my best friends are white people.”

Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) is dictating to Diane in the company of Harry (Michael Ontkean), both just left Gerard (Al Strobel) the one-armed man (“What’s left of him.”) Leland is entertaining the extras, dancing in the hotel lobby to no music. They tell him they’ve arrested Ben for Laura’s murder. He’s visibly upset, crying into his golf club handle, but very happy upon leaving them. HOLD THE PHONE, HE JUST LOOKED AT THE CAMERA!? Is Bob a Deadpool? Does he know he’s in a TV show? Cooper suspects something. Bob-Leland golf club cane dances away.

“This won’t hurt a bit” Doc (Warren Frost) pricks Ben’s finger for blood sample, that hurts a lot, thank you. Cooper owns Jerry with the facts, finished last in his law class and failed the bar exam twice, license revoked in Illinois, Florida, Alaska, Massachusetts. Laura’s diary reveals she was going to tell the world about Ben and One Eyed Jacks, but then she dies. “Your alibi has been roasted” Jerry, harsh. “As your attorney, your friend, and your brother, I strongly suggest you get yourself a better lawyer.” Smartest thing Jerry has ever said.

Bobby (Dana Ashbrook) is making a tape copy of Ben and Leo talking about the mill, plans to blackmail Ben. Leo (Eric DaRe) is not eating well, throwing it over Shelley (Madchen Amick). “I’ve decided to pursue a career in business, executive suite, I’m gonna give you everything you want.” She wants a full time nanny.

Norma’s mother Vivian (JAne Greer) arrives at the Double-R diner, taste-tests the mashed potato to check for potato flakes. Introduces her new husband and winner of world’s widest collar award, financial analyst Ernie (James Booth). Norma (Peggy Lipton) is still concerned about the imminent arrival of critic M. T. Wentz.

Gerard awakens, concerned Bob is nearby, gets his nurse out the way, clubs his guard and escapes out the window. Hank (Chris Mulkey) has been missing for 48 hours! Vivian made a pie at the diner. “Prison treat you well?”

Pete (Jack Nance) visits Harry at the station, Harry looking at a woodpecker. Pete tells him Josie is gone, left a note that she’s gone. They both loved Josie. Conflicting stories about the guy she left with – Harry thinks he’s her assistant Mr. Lee, Pete her cousin Jonathan. Andy (HArry Goaz) arrives to see Lucy holding her sister’s baby, he’s stupid but he can’t think that’s her baby, surely. Faints.

Pete visits Ben in prison, laughs at him. Arrives with cassette player with message from Catherine (Piper Laurie). I love Pete laughing at Ben’s plight, been sleeping with his wife. Catherine will give his alibi if he signs the mill and Ghostwood Estate to him. In frustration Ben ransacks his cell, feathers flying everywhere.

Leland driving along, swerving all over the road singing Surrey with a Fringe on Top from Oklahoma/When Harry Met Sally, flagged down by Harry and Cooper. “Uh-oh!” “I started thinking about Ben, my mind must’ve wandered.” Leland is framing Ben, says he mentioned some kind of dairy, maybe a diary? Leland getting cocky, goes to show Cooper his new clubs from the bag Maddy’s body is in, but Cooper and Harry called away as Gerard been found. What would Leland-Bob have done if Cooper looked in the bag?

Gerard is let loose to sense the presence of Bob on Ben, with Harry, Hawk and Jerry present too. “Clearly this man’s stairs don’t reach the attic.” Jerry pulls the “It’s been 24 hours, charge him or let him go” bluff, so they charge him. Cooper has doubts, doesn’t think Ben did it, but it’s Harry’s call.

Hank and Norma are out for dinner with Vivian and Ernie, Hank a little uncouth, doesn’t stand when the ladies go to the loo. Hank and Ernie get reacquainted, turns out they knew each other in prison. Ernie met Vivien at a Republican fundraiser, so they’re probably bad people. Ernie is trying to go straight, to tell the truth, to reliably handle Vivien’s finances. In the past he stole from a Savings & Loan, a regular Mr. Potter. Vivian doesn’t know his past, so Hank sees a potential blackmail opportunity?

Audrey (Sherilyn Fenn) visits Cooper in his room and talks about her father. “All I ever really wanted was him to love me. He’s ashamed of me.” If you recall, at One-Eyed Jacks Ben very nearly did love her, but she called it off. Cooper gets a phone call, sends Audrey back to her room and rushes out to the waterfall, Maddy’s body has been found wrapped in plastic, gotta be deja vu for most of the people in the town!

New mysteries:
What is Leland-Bob going to do next? Just keep killing?
Is Hank going to blackmail Ernie?
Is Ernie really going straight, or is it an act? – I think he’s possibly trying to go straight, but now he’s in Twin Peaks he’ll get embroiled in something and his past will eventually be revealed to his new wife. If this were a soap opera, it’d be revealed to Norma first, then she’d have to keep it secret from Vivian, and it’d all come out in a shouting match of familial betrayal.

Old Mysteries:
What happened to Laura? – Killed by Leland possessed by Bob?
Who assaulted Ronette? – Leland (plus Leo and Jacques) whilst possessed by Bob
Who is the “J” Laura was anxious about meeting?
Who was the shadowy figure behind Leo in the woods? – Presumably it really was Leland, but possessed by Bob
What did any of Cooper’s dream mean?
Who is the third man seen on the night of Laura’s murder? – Bob possessing Leland
Who is the father of Lucy’s child? – She reveals in this episode that she’s not quite sure, could be Andy or Dick Tremayne Designer Menswear.
Who attacked Jacoby?
Who shot Cooper?
Is the Waiter real?
What did any of Cooper’s new dream mean?
Why did Leland’s hair turn white? – Because he was inhabited by Bob.
What’s up with this Wyndham Earle character?
What’s with the magic Tremond kid?
Who is the Wildman? How does Leland know him? – Wildman is Bob, not sure how they first meet but they’ve become quite close since then.
Who was trying to call Harry at the police station?
If the owls are not what they seem, what are they? – The owls could be representations of whatever the Giant is, Log Lady said there were owls at the courthouse, then the Giant appeared.
Why does Nadine think she’s 18? Why is she super-strong now?
Why did Harold have Laura’s diary? – Maybe he was telling the truth, Laura trusted him and they wrote her diary together.
Who is M. T. Wentz? – By this point it’s got to be someone that’s already there. The only out-of-towners are Josie’s cousin Jonathan, Lucy’s sister Gwen, Vivian and Ernie, or Catherine in her Mr. Tojamura disguise. Not sure about any of them really.
When are Cooper and Sid going to hook up? – Still no Sid and the judge, maybe they’ve left the show for good. Ah well.
Who is Cousin Jonathan / Mr. Lee, really?
Why did Wyndham Earle sending Cooper a chess move?
Why did Leland take the animal fur? – He seems to be setting Ben up, so this might be to do with that.
What’s on the cassette Bobby found in Leo’s heel? – Blackmail material!
Is this the last time we’ll see Sheryl Lee? Or is there another cousin/aunt/relative who will arrive for Maddy’s funeral?
