2014 Review of the Year Part 2 of 3

Here’s part 2 of my 2014 review of the Year. You can read the first part, listing my worst 18 movies of the year, here. From here on in, I’d at least recommend that these films are worth watching. Continue reading

2014 Review of the Year Part 1 of 3

It’s the end of another year, which means it’s time for my traditional (as of last year) end of year review. In 2013 I saw 50 movies released that year, and like every sequel this year it went bigger and better, because I went and watched a grand total of 58. Some of these were released outside of the UK earlier than this year, but I never let a thing like that get in the way of me ranking films into an arbitrary order. Oh, and technically one of these films hasn’t come out yet in the UK. We’ll get to that.

As with last year, I’ve split this post into three. Today you get my bottom 18 movies, tomorrow (or when I post the next page) the following 20, and soon after that will be the much hallowed Top 20 list. Be sure to come back to see what made the top. Continue reading

My Week in Movies, 2015 Week 1

I said I was going to do it, so here I am. This is the start of a new weekly post I’ll be writing, touching on the films and TV I’ve seen in the past week that doesn’t I don’t have a chance to review properly, as well as keeping you folks updated on the progress of my 2015 Movie Goals. This being only half a week, I’m only labelling it as Week Zero for the year, Week One proper will be this coming week.

I’ve been fortunate enough to have not been back to work since Christmas, so these past few days have been spent revelling in movie-land, including three trips to the cinema, which is pretty damn unheard of, if you ask me. So let’s stop dicking around and get on with it, shall we? Continue reading

Bob le Flambeur

Bob (Roger Duchesne) is an ageing gangster who, despite being a criminal, is generally a fairly decent guy. He did time for a robbery 20 years ago, but seems to have calmed down in his accelerating years. Paolo (Daniel Cauchy) is his protégé, and Bob has a friend in the police, whose life he saved many years ago. Bob’s one weakness is gambling and, for some time now, he’s been on a horrific losing streak, unable to pick up a single hand. When a situation arises in which Bob needs some money, he, Paolo and a few others concoct a one-last-job scheme to knock over a casino and set them up for life. bob Continue reading

Most Anticipated Movies of 2015

There’s a whole heck load of movies coming out this year. Like, more than a dozen. I’m planning to watch a few, here and there, so here’s a handy-dandy little plan for my 2015 cinematic calendar. I’ve included the UK release date (some of these films have already been released elsewhere some time ago), as well as an idea of how excited I am to see them based on how I’ll actually probably see them. The key is here:
Cinema – Fairly straightforward, I’ll be seeing this in the theatre. The highest possible acclaim.
LoveFilm: High Priority – LoveFilm, my DVD rental service, has three different levels of priority. This is the highest.
LoveFilm: Medium Priority – This is the middle priority level.
LoveFilm: Low Priority – And this, somewhat predictably, is the lowest priority, reserved only for those films in which I have a passing interest but wouldn’t care if I didn’t see them. There are exceptions to some of these rankings, which I’ll get into, but this is a fairly straightforward guide. Continue reading

Life Vs Film in 2015

I don’t really believe in New Year’s Resolutions – why wait for a specific day to start bettering yourself when surely it’d be more beneficial to start immediately – but I do understand the notion of setting goals to achieve in a set period, and a year seems like a decent amount of time to do that with, so as with 2014 I’m aiming to keep a schedule and meet some goals over the next twelve months. Without further ado, here’s my ambitions for the site in 2015: Continue reading
